Surrey and BC municipalities should end contracts with American firms, and stop buying U.S. products: Linda Annis
Surrey, B.C. (September 9, 2026): Surrey First Councillor and candidate for mayor Linda Annis says the City of Surrey should do its part as President Donald Trump threatens to remove Canadian products from U.S. government contracts. Trump made the threat in a social media post on Tuesday.
“Even though Canada did not start this tariff fight, we’re definitely in it to win it,” said Annis. “Mr. Trump is mad that Canada stood up for itself and put counter-tariffs in place this week. Now he wants to remove Canadian products from U.S. government contracts. Our response as British Columbia municipalities should be simple and quick: two can play that game. Our Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention takes place this month in Vancouver, and if Mr. Trump goes ahead with the threat, we should vote to support the Prime Minister and Canada by removing U.S. firms and products from our municipal shopping lists which include products or services.”
Annis said the Trump tariffs hurt both Canadian and American consumers, and Canadians will be challenged because the American economy is so much larger than Canada’s but living in fear of Donald Trump is no way to live our lives.
“One day, we hope America will come to its senses, but right now we have to stand up for ourselves, and when we’re united, we’re definitely stronger,” said Annis. “Our local municipalities, including right here in Surrey, can do our part, and help set an example that buying Canadian and using Canadian suppliers and services is the way to go. It might cost a bit more and be a little harder to source, but it is the right thing to do as we shift our economy from its reliance on the United States.”
