Surrey’s new mayor and council need to take a “team Surrey” approach to next provincial government: Linda Annis
Surrey, B.C. (October 15, 2026): Surrey First candidate for mayor Linda Annis says the BC Conservatives’ decision to build a bridge to replace the Massey Tunnel is good news for Surrey commuters, and she ALSO applauded their support for a Surrey Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
“All of us in Surrey have watched the politics playout on replacing the Massey Tunnel, and there is overwhelming local support for a bridge rather than another tunnel,” said Annis. “The key is getting this long-overdue transportation project completed as quickly as possible. We have waited too long with nothing to show for the time and millions already spent. Years and millions of dollars have been wasted. If the NDP government had not cancelled the original bridge replacement project we would already be using the new bridge. Instead, we watched the years fly by and the budget soar.”
Annis also said the Conservatives’ support for a Surrey Women’s and Children’s Hospital is another sign that provincial politicians recognize the incredible growth happening in Surrey.
“We are about to become the largest city in the province, but it’s hard to step up when you do not have the necessary infrastructure to support growth,” said Annis. “All of us in Surrey, including everyone running in the municipal election, know how underserved we are when it comes to provincial health services, transit, new schools, and other important infrastructure.”
Annis said as mayor she would take a “team Surrey” approach that included regular meetings with Surrey’s MLAs and MPs.
“Our MLAs and MPs need to know that their city and its residents are counting on them when they head off to Ottawa and Victoria,” added Annis. “Frankly, we are punching below our political weight. It is impossible to become premier of British Columbia without winning in Surrey. Every political party knows that, and our new mayor and council need to take the lead on ensuring Surrey gets the infrastructure it needs and deserves, particularly when you realize how quickly we are growing.”
